A pillow made from a length of Tsutsugaki-dyed cotton with repeated motifs This handsome length of indigo-dyed cotton was dyed in the tsutsugaki method which is a freehand-drawn resist technique where rice paste is applied directly onto cloth using a paper cone which resembles a pastry bag. Down the length of this cloth are four hand-resisted motifs in two designs, presumably family crests. The designs are grey and are outlined in white. The cloth is most certainly hand-loomed and the cotton yarns seem to be handspun. The condition is good and used, and there is a small tear to one of the selvedges. Early 20th century Japan
